CONN AND WOOD CROWNED INAUGURAL LUCAS OIL SHOOT OUT CHAMPIONS
Thorold, Ontario … Southern Ontario and Western New York race fans saw two fresh and unique new series unfold in 2006 with two drivers sharing the spotlight with the least amount of points as inaugural champions of the Lucas Oil Shoot Out by dirttrackdigest.com for both DIRT Northeast Sportsmen and 358 Modified divisions

St. Catharines second generation driver Wayne Conn took control of the Sportsmen Series early on while fellow second generation veteran Scott Wood of Thorold took home the 358 Modified Title with consistency the key.

“ The Shoot Out showcased our local drivers in a very unique way,” relates Merrittville GM Erica Bicknell, “ Wayne continues to lead our Dirt Weekly Racing Series Sportsmen Standings Saturday Nights with the most points  … but in the new Lucas Oil Shoot Out – he won the title with the least.”

“I was real happy to see an international company such as Lucas Oil support grass roots racing,” reveals Lucas Oil Sportsmen Shoot Out Champion Wayne Conn, “ it was a series full of excitement and surprises … I can’t thank everyone enough … hopefully we’ll see them continue their support next season.”

In the Sportsmen portion, 77 different drivers competed in events at Friday Night tracks Ohsweken and Ransomville Speedways, Saturday Night tracks Genesee and Merrittville Speedways and the lone Sunday Night race place – the New Humberstone Speedway while 38 different 358 Modified drivers participated at the same facilities.

“It was a good deal,” relates Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shoot Out Champion Scott Wood, “ I enjoyed going to the different tracks … I’ve got to thank Lucas Oil and all the tracks for putting everything together … while I run against these guys every weekend … the series brought us to some neutral playing fields.”

“Local race fans had never seen anything like it … until this summer,” informs DirtTrackDigest.com’s Adam Ross, “ there were a number of Sportsmen drivers that had a shot at the title in the Merrittville finale while the same held true for 358 Modifieds at Ohsweken … local Dirt Racing is what we’re all about – we’re just as excited about how both Shoot Outs unfolded”

For the Sportsmen it all started at the Humberstone Speedway with a 50 lap event Sunday May 28th and Wayne Conn came home the winner.  A visit to Ohsweken Speedway for the second round Friday June 23rd found Conn again in top spot.

Genesee Speedway Regular Brian Sage found some home track advantage in winning at the Batavia New York track July 8th while Conn finished in 6th.  The Series was set to conclude at Ransomville August 11th but a rainout at Merrittville moved the finale to the Thorold Track on August 12th.

Jeff McGinnis won the Ransomville event while Merrittville’s 55 lapper found first time winner Anthony Rizzardo in Victory Lane. Conn settled for 10th at the Big R and second at Merrittville earning the Shoot Out Title by 10 points over Ransomville regular Kevin Wills.

For Wood the Championship run began May 26th at Ransomville Speedway with a 6 place finish followed by a win Genesee Speedway back on Saturday June 24. In Merrittville Speedway’s July 15th 55 lap event, Wood finished in the runner-up spot followed by a 5th at Humberstone Speedway Sunday July 23 and another 6th in the 35 lap finale at Ohsweken Speedway Friday August 11th.

Other Shoot Out Event winners included Scott Kerwin (Ransomville Speedway), Pete Bicknell, (Merrittville and Humberstone) and Adam Ferri in the finale at Ohsweken.

“It’s something all of our facilities needed,” relates Ransomville’s Joel Friesen, adding, “ it brought some new fans and drivers to all of our tracks … each event provided some incredible racing.”

“We’re really looking forward to next year’s edition,” adds Humberstone GM and Race Director Bob Davidson, “ with the help of Lucas Oil and Dirt TrackDigest.com … both rookie drivers and veterans were able to share the spotlight in both divisions.”

“This new and exciting series gave our race teams a chance to participate in a lucrative series,” adds Merrittville’s Erica Bicknell, “ we’re hoping to build on the initial success of this year.”

For each Shoot Out Series, a Point Fund was awarded to the top 10 at the final event of each series. As an added bonus, drivers in each respective series that attended all 5 of their events shared in a 5 for 5 $2500 Series Bonus for their perfect attendance. The Sportsmen portion had 15 drivers with perfect attendance while 11 358 Modified Drivers attended the entire series.

Between the 5 Series events for each Division, Point Fund and 5 for 5 Bonus Monies – the 2006 Lucas Oil Shoot Out by DirtTrackDigest.com will award Southern Ontario and Western New York Race Teams more than $70,000.

“It was definitely a highlight of our season … hosting the 358 Mod Finale,” informs Announcer Clinton Geoffrey, “ to have the level of competition we had for our event … it was just awesome.”
