Alex Schuts the door on 2013 Season
at Merrittville with 100 lap
Enduro Victory

Alex Schuts came from 41st starting spot to close the door on Merrittville Speedway’s 2013 Season – taking home the Victory in the 100 lap Enduro accelerated by Niagara College Sunday September 8th.

Lee Hils was the first to lead at start before his brother Glem Hils was the new leader before one lap was complete. The first ref flag stalled things on Lap 5 after regular Sportsman Driver Charlie Lynch was stranded down the back stretch. Glen Hils was back out front on the restart with Todd Gordon into second along with Brett Stratford into the  top  5 from a 39th place start.

The second red came on lap 17 after Mike Nichols stopped with a broken front suspension After the red flag, the unofficial top 5 was Glen Hils, Alex Schuts, Gordon, Lee Hils and Dave Ruch. Glen Hils was back in control when the green flag turned them loose. The track maintenance watering made the race track at spots  looking like the new roundabout at the end of the 406 in Welland The third red flag on lap 28 was needed for a number of stranded cars around the track BJ Pattison was sandwiched by Glen and Lee Hils as the top 3 on the restart with Gordon and Ken McCleod as the top 5.

Gordon landed into top spot quickly until Glen Hils regained top spot after the Saturday Night Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modified veteran got hung up with slower cars. Gordon and Paul Davies came together with Gordon facing the wrong way on the track. Another red slowed the field on lap 41 after Brian Hardy made contact with the front stretch wall. With Hils who won the first qualifier back in May on Zavitz Financial Strategies Night back out front another red stalled the event on lap 44.1 lead on restart The Hils Brothers – Glen and Lee who won the July 29th Qualifier on Boltworks Night and Brett Stratford were unofficially the Top Three with Ken McLeod following. Lee took over top spot from his brother before Glen suffered a flat tire while Lee didn’t have any rubber left on his right rear but somehow was able to continue.

A red flag on lap 61 allowed things down once again for track maintenance and after heavy contact between a number of cars into Turn 1. While under the red the leader pitted and unfortunately would be given a 5 lap penalty Ken McLeod, Brent Campbell and Fred Korneef were unofficially the top 3 after the restart. A couple laps after the restart,  McLeod got spun into Turn 1 but was able to continue Red flags on Laps 68 and 71 had Korneef, McLeod and Alex Schuts were the top three.

A red flag on lap 78 had the field back under green for a 20 lap run to the finish with Schuts the new leader quickly when racing resumed. Schuts – a 2013 Rookie in the 4 Cylinder Division this season at Ohsweken Speedway who finished 2nd in points went 4 wide thru lap traffic threading the needle through a number of cars. Lap 94 saw the race stalled one last time after Mitchell Poirer’s car became stranded on top of the guardrail out of turn 3 While under red,  Todd Gordon’s rad let go and dropped a lot of fluid but miraculously he was able to continue.

With Schuts the unofficial winner in the Insta-Insulation # 28, Merrittville Speedway’s timing and scoring officials reviewed Scorer’s sheets with Peter Becker, Jeremy Smith, Karl Sault and Korneef as the top 5. With neither of the Qualifier Winners coming home first in the 100 and taking home the $500 bonus, Theo VanWely, Dave Ruch, Laney Paddock, Adam Jansen, Syme denHollander, Karl Sault, Tim Bilby, Rich Ferri, David Walsh and Brian Hegedus  were awarded $50 Cash Bonuses via a draw of drivers that had registered prior to September 1st. In between performances by After Shock and Krazy Train, an added Backwards Race saw Tim Farrell take home the win in the 12 lap event that had the entries running in reverse gear.
