“For more than 60 years our fans have come to expect great
entertainment all summer long … week in and week out – it’s our
local drivers - maybe even your next door neighbour that
provides it,” boasted (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica
Bicknell-Jones, adding “our focus continues on our weekly events
and with some special events mixed in … it’s a recipe for an
exciting season from start to finish.”
Merrittville Speedway’s owners – the Bicknell and Williamson families and their staff pride themselves in producing a quick paced and efficient race program on one of best racing surfaces around with the end result – quality events with some of the fiercest competition at any short track anywhere.
When you look at the new schedule for the Thorold DIRTcar-sanctioned facility’s 62nd consecutive season, each division - from the Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modifieds and Rick’s Delivery Sportsman Divisions right through to the Hoosier Stocks … J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites and the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders are all showcased in extra distance extra money events. Traditional fan favourite specials round out the season long experience.
The countdown to the 2013 Seaway Mall Spring Sizzler is picking
up speed and when the April 27th event arrives – it
features the Patriot Sprint Tour along with the 358 Modified and
“Our Lucas Oil Fan Surveys last season told us that our fans
would like to see more Sprint Cars,” informs Bicknell-Jones,
“with that in mind … mark June 29th on your calendars
as a must see event when the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints help
us celebrate Canada Day!”
Race fans will want to come hungry for the annual Boltworks
Event. All night in the Grandstands – Piller’s Hot Dogs are $1
and on the track … the second Sprint Car Spectacular will be
bolstered by the 358 Modifieds … another Hoosier Stock Duel on
the Dirt Big 6 Series Home Track Event and the 2nd
Ironman Enduro Qualifier accelerated by
For full fendered fans – both the Hoosier Stocks and the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders provide some of the best side by side competition rivalling that at any facility.
The Hoosier Stocks once again will battle the Brighton Speedway Pro Stocks with Home Track Events at each Saturday Night Track leading up to combined 50 lap Main Events paying a $1,000 to win each in September.
The 4 Cylinder Division has to be one of the most unique divisions with so many different makes and models in competition. The Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinder Triple Crown Series puts the entry level division in the spotlight on three separate occasions throughout the summer.
Unique as well are the motorcycle-engine powered cars that make up the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Division. The two day Stars International Championship Weekend will help close out the season Friday and Saturday September 6th and 7th – attracting drivers from Quebec and several US States – from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Delaware to Georgia … Iowa and many in between. Two TUSA Modified Lite Hoosier Mr Dirt Racing Canadian West Series Events will lead up to the Nationals at the Mohawk Raceway in late September.
Three events continue to draw Race Teams and Fans alike from far and wide when the Super DIRTcar Series makes a visit featuring Big Blocks, 358 Modifieds and Sportsman Divisions.
Since 1972, the first Monday in August has played host to the ground pounding … earth shaking … window rattling … 800 horsepower Big Block Modifieds. Not since the 1992 edition has a Merrittville weekly competitor played such a role as Mike Bowman did last year – a dominating performance that saw the St. Catharines native lead all 100 laps taking home more than the posted $6,000 USA Winner’s Share in the process.
The Event remembers the former Modified Point Champion turned Pit Steward and L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Famer Bob St. Amand Senior. His family honors his memory through the event and with the support of both the local business community and some of the best fans create several bonus programs that reward Merrittville regulars.
What can race fans look forward to this season when L. St. Amand Enterprises and St. Amand Auto and Truck Repair present the 4th Annual Bob Sr. Memorial 100 on Monday August 5th?
You might get an idea when the 100 lap 358 Modified Super DIRTcar Series helps celebrate Victoria Day on Zavitz Financial Strategies and Employee Benefits Night Monday May 20th.
The Rick’s Delivery Sportsman Division will help close out the season Saturday September 7th with a 50 lap Tour Stop along the Super DIRTcar Series that has our own Cody McPherson as the defending Series Champion.
2012 was a career year for the second generation driver who also earned the David Chevrolet King of the Crates Mini-Series Title en route to his first Overall Championship. Three events – including a 50 lap $1,000 to win Finale will see who has the right stuff this season.
Two 50 lap Events for the 358 Modifieds help
When Lucas Oil presents Nostalgia Night on Saturday July 13th – the winner of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 50 will take home the Jerry Winger Memorial Trophy. First awarded in 1959, the Night remembers the two-time champion who passed away due to illness.
Hosted by the Speedway’s Reunion Committee, Nostalgia Night also includes Vintage Race Cars, an Alumni get together and the L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame – a must see event for long-time race fans who remember the cars and stars … back in the day!
When it comes time for the Brian’s Tire Repair Championship Chase Finale, another history-laden award will be presented in addition to the honoring of the 2013 Point Champions from all 5 Divisions.
The Driver that wins the 50 lap John Spencer Memorial for the 358 Modifieds receives an award that dates back to 1953.
If you are on the edge of your seat all summer long at Merrittville Speedway and think that racing might be for you – one way to find out is the Ironman Enduro Qualifying Series with three events leading up to Sunday September 8th’s Smash-o-Rama and the 100 lap Enduro accelerated by Niagara College and Monster Truck Car-Crushin’ Season Finale.
