THOROLD, ONTARIO – When you were enjoying shoveling out last Friday after the biggest storm since the Blizzard of ’77 – three of Merrittville Speedway’s J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Drivers were enjoying themselves in the sun around the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Three time point Champion Josh Sliter, his dad Ray and Dan Kviring were all in competition in the TUSA Hoosier Mr. Dirt Winternationals at the East Bay Raceway Park. After Wednesday Night’s Mod Lite World Shoot Out it wasn’t all fun though as Ray Sliter made the highlight reel after taking a violent looking flip just before Turn 1.
If you haven’t seen it yet – click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhk3aiN_8a4. It happens quite early in the event. “The first race down there is always crazy,” remembered Ray at home since returning, “honestly I had thought of giving up my spot and starting at the back of the pack … in hindsight maybe I should have. I got turned sideways and someone drove into the side of the car and you can see how it all turned out.” Sliter was a little sore but upon returning home went to his doctor only to find out that he had broken his collar bone. “I’m doing ok … I just have to take it easy but I can’t wait to get back on the track in May,” revealed Sliter, “besides … we had plans to build a 4th car for this season … so I have some work ahead of me.”
The 17 that Ray raced in the World Shoot Out which featured drivers from England and Australia joining Americans and Canadians suffered only cosmetic damage and was repaired in time for Dan Kviring’s use in the other events. “Dan was probably a little frustrated with his results down south,” reported Sliter, “East Bay is a lot like Merrittville but surprisingly enough it’s an abrasive surface … you have to make all the right choices with tires … Josh’s first time there – he didn’t qualify either.” Kviring will campaign his own car once again in 2013 and may return to Niagara from his current home of Pembroke. Kviring’s son Zachary is a former Tuesday Night Kart Racer. The Sliters will field Josh’s 17, Ray’s 26 and the 27 for second year driver Ray Koabel and a 4th car. “When you travel to tracks like East Bay … or drivers come to Merrittville for the International – they bring the best equipment,” informs Sliter, “we’d like to be in that position ourselves … but we may also be bringing a 4th driver to the division as well.”
A top 10 finish in Friday Night’s event meant Josh was a guaranteed starter in Saturday Night’s Winternationals A Main where he finished 5th earning a $200 Bonus for the top Spec Engine Finisher. “We like the Spec Engine … there more reliable than the Open Motors,” stated Sliter, “they are an advantage sometimes though … in the finale Josh used up his tires … but he was competitive right to the final lap.”
The Sliter’s Leader Race Car Modified Lites will once again be sponsored by Crutchfield Performance, the Canadian Tire in Port Colborne, Thurston Machine Company Ltd., SWS Canada and South Coast Laser. The team hopes to announce a new marketing partner in the weeks leading up to the start of the season.
Sliter who is the President of the Modified Lite Club also used the trip south to promote the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Stars International Championship Weekend that will help close the 62nd Season Friday September 6th and Saturday September 7th. “It’s nice to have problems down there and get them out of the way before weekly competition begins at home,” admitted Sliter, “in the World Shoot Out Josh had a spindle just break apart.” Josh who is focused on a possible 4th straight Merrittville Speedway Points Championship and another TUSA Canada West Championship in 2013 is still focused on enjoying his off season. “We have been making the trip to East Bay for 5 years now,” said Sliter, “it’s all about the racing … but it’s a holiday too … we enjoy ourselves the whole week and that includes taking in a Tampa Bay Lightning game as well.”
Josh probably enjoyed hearing the news back home of last week’s storm as a snowmobile trip up north is next on his schedule. A schedule that includes having his own car and his dad’s ready for display at the Seaway Mall from April 6th to 12th along with Race Cars from all 5 Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Divisions.
