Thorold, Ontario (April
6) – It’s 20 days and counting down to Merrittville
Speedway’s Baron Roofing Windows and Doors Spring
Sizzler 100 – Saturday April 26th.
With the big day
getting that much closer – so too is practice day.
The evening session
set for Saturday April 19th – 13 days away – may be
one of the most important practices ever – with three
divisions in big events right off the start – the
following week.
Not only will the
fastest two time trialers from each division be locked
into the front row for their feature events Saturday
May 3rd when Global Warranty Corporation hosts the
first point event – a large number of drivers will be
looking to get all the bugs worked out of their cars.
“This time of year –
the weather can do anything,” storms (Merrittville
Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell, “we are in good shape –
we have spent almost a full week back at the track and
everything is starting to come together nicely.”
In the Thorold track’s
previous 56 seasons – never before has such an event
kicked off the season as not only will the L. St.
Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds be put to the test in
their biggest event when the 358 Modified Super
DIRTcar Series opens it’s season with a 100 lap event
– the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman are set for a 40
lap main as well. The night will also feature a 25 lap
Street Stock Open.
Merrittville
Speedway’s Test Tune and Time Trial Night may also see
some other race cars as the event is open to any dirt
race car.
The BRP Can Am Late
Models are set to highlight Meridian Credit Union’s
Rankin Cancer Run Night Saturday May 17th and the full
fendered fan favorites may be in need of some track
time in preparation for their only 2008 visit.
Making their first
Merrittville Appearance are the Ontario Dirt Late
Models as part of Saturday August 2nd Hingston Metal
Fabricators Night – so several of that group’s race
teams may wish to give the d-shaped oval a try in
preparation for that date as well.
Merrittville plays
host to one Sprint Car Event and this season – David
Chevrolet Corvette Night will feature the Patriot
Sprint Group. That special will close a very busy
month of May on the 31st – so mark that one on your
list of must see events this season.
Merrittville’s Race
Teams may also get into the Practice mode themselves
as May 10th’s Pen Centre Night also features the Open
Wheel Mechanics Race – so this is the perfect time for
the guys or girls behind the scenes of our 358
Modified or Sportsmen teams to give it a shot.
The 2008 Sportsman
Super DIRTcar Series will help close Merrittville’s
Season during the J&S Weekend in September – but it
just started at the Black Rock Speedway with
Merrittville and other local race teams faring quite
well.
Fifty-six open-wheel
entries signed in and topping the list of locals was
Greg Panunte who finished 6th. Boyd MacTavish (9th)
and Mark Dixon (10th) helped complete the top 10 with
Mat Williamson (11th), James Friesen (12th), Rob Knapp
(14th).
Merrittville Speedway
Original Pizza Logs Sportsman 2007 Champion Chad
Chevalier was 16th.
Mark D'Ilario started
on the pole and may have had a better finish than his
19th had he not made contact with an infield marker
tire.
Mike Bowman was 25th
while Tyler McPherson was 29th.
Tom Flannigan, Justin
Sharp, Luke Carleton and Rick Bellante were among the
25 drivers that failed to qualify while Kevin Knapp
had the same misfortune in the companion Street Stock
Event.
When the Pen Centre Race
Car Show moves out tonight – that can only mean one
thing – Merrittville Speedway’s 2008 Season is just
around the corner.
Your local Dirt Track
is where it’s at and it’s at Merrittville Speedway in
just 20 Days – Saturday April 26th.
The star studded 358
Modified Super DIRTcar Series Stars are set to
challenge our home town heroes in the Spring Sizzler
100 Super DIRTcar Series presented by Baron Roofing
Windows and Doors.
April’s Event also
includes a 40 lap event for the Sportsman and a 25 lap
Street Stock Open Event
All of these Special
Events puts Merrittville Speedway on the map as must
see events and it’s just the start of 2008 – you won’t
want to miss a single event all season!
