(March 26) – For many Niagara families this is a busy
time of year – hockey season is winding down and the
summer sports are about to start.
One such family is the
Bosse Family; as George and Bonita are looking forward
to another summer of football and lacrosse for their
sons – Michael and Adam. And for Michael – they are
hoping that his lacrosse schedule will not conflict
with his rookie season in the Hoosier Stock Division.
Merrittville
Speedway’s Baron Roofing Spring Sizzler 100 is now
just 31 days away and for the two Bosse #31s – the
rush is on – with the final touches being done to both
cars.
George’s #31 2008 TEO
358 Modified will be debuted next week during the Pen
Centre Race Car Show and Michael’s #31 Hoosier Stock
should be ready for Practice Day.
“I’d like to get him
into the school,” relates a proud father George, “he’s
almost a natural at any of his other sports … but one
thing he’s going to need is lots of … is seat time.”
Both Michael and his
younger brother Adam got their first taste of racing
last summer when they participated in the Cameron
Motorsports Kart Racing Series last in Hamilton. It
seems that neither will return this summer though as
Michael looks forward to his new endeavor and Adam has
taken more a liking to his stick and ball sports.
“We’re going to take
it easy this year,” added Bosse, “we’ll wait to see
how he does every week … and how he likes it … it’s
really up to him.”
George’s only worry is
that Michael will choose his racing over his travel
hockey and lacrosse. In addition to league play –
Michael also is on several teams at West Park in St.
Catharines.
That High School and
the Western Hill Region have produced quite a who’s
who of racers. Back in the day it was drivers like
Pete Bicknell, Danny Rizzardo, Brian Stevens and Bill
and Tammy Willard. Today – it’s a whole new crop –
including many second generation drivers – Tyler and
Cody McPherson, Travis Braun, BJ Willard, Mat
Williamson and many others.
Is it something in the
water or when the roar of the engines drifts over the
12 Mile Creek into the neighborhood on a Saturday
Night – are there subliminal messages?
Who knows … but once
racing gets into your blood – it’s awful hard to
leave.
“I grew up in the
stands watching my dad race,” said 15 year old
Michael, “I knew at a young age that I wanted to race
… it would be a cool thing to do.”
Growing up, George’s
introduction to the sport came from his neighbors in
Merritton – the Saunders family – Gary and his sons
and former racers – Carl and Mike.
As an 18 year old,
George got his start in a Street Stock and eventually
moved through the ranks to the Sportsmen Division –
where he was up to last season.
2008 marks the 14th
season that he has enjoyed a relationship with his car
owners – Philip Schultz and Vince Cino – both who are
from the Central New York Area.
“I was running Genesee
at the time,” remembered Bosse, “we parked next to
each other … shared tools … parts … and developed a
friendship.”
When his son Adam was
born George missed a week at the Batavia NY Track and
so did his two friends – although they did show up at
the track hoping to meet with George, “keeping up with
the business and two toddlers … I just couldn’t do
it.”
His two pit neighbors
had come to talk to him about coming to drive for them
as they were looking for a change as well.
“The boys were growing
up quickly and doing their sports,” prided Bosse, “
the time came when I had to step back again … leaving
at 3 PM to go to the track and getting home at 3 AM
became too much of an ordeal … so I had to go to the
guys.”
George is fortunate to
have such a pair of car owners.
Schultz and Cino
wanted to stay involved with Bosse and basically told
him to take everything home – set your own racing
schedule and have fun.
That arrangement
launched his L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modified
Career last season.
The two are still
behind him and stay in touch – visiting Merrittville
on occasion or other races especially World of Outlaw
Late Model Events.
Both of the Bosse’s
cars will be sponsored by the family-owned Frontier
Auto Dismantlers, Priority Collision, the Oliver Black
Band and Lococo’s Fruit and Vegetables. George’s new
TEO will be powered by an ERD Engine while Michael’s
Hoosier Stock has the Ken Cosgrove-built engine in it
that came with the car.
Michael’s 31 was last
raced by Danielle Landry – a car that she bought from
Dolph McCready.
Helping out with both
cars are Dave Colavecchia – a former Mod Stock Driver
and his two sons Allan and Brian as well as Jon and
Leo.
While George’s new car
has much of the running gear bolted to it from last
year – the Frontier yard also has in stock his former
Troyer and BRP cars of past seasons.
“If he shows the
interest,” revealed George, “someday Michael can make
the move up to my car … I have enough around to make
him a nice Sportsman.”
Wherever their racing
takes them – George and his son Michael and the family
will share their love of racing.
With Merrittville’s
57th Season now just 31 days away – much of it’s
success is due to it’s racing families – where the
love of the sport carries over from one generation to
the next.
