Thorold, Ontario (March
22) – Southern Ontario and Western New York Race fans
are in for a real treat when Merrittville Speedway
opens for the 2008 Season in just 35 days with the
Baron Roofing Spring Sizzler 100 – Saturday April
26th.
If you have been
waiting since last year however to enjoy the L. St.
Amand Enterprises 358 Mods in their first 35 lap
Feature Event of the new season – unfortunately you
will have to wait until May 3rd’s Global Warranty
Corporation sponsored race card.
The Baron Roofing
Spring Sizzler 100 is just that – a 100 lap 358
Modified Super DIRTcar Series Event.
And when you throw the
two other events on the race card for April 26th – a
40 lap Sportsman Event and a 25 lap Street Stock Open
– racing will make quite a return with 165 laps of
just feature action alone.
“Hosting the series as
our first event … will be a challenge for all of us,”
relates (Merrittville co-owner and Champion Racer)
Pete Bicknell, “but I’m hoping that it will give our
local teams some momentum to follow the tour when it
kicks into high gear.”
The first event of Merrittville Speedway’s 57th
consecutive season is also the initial event for the
2008 358 Modified Super DIRTcar Series which after a
long run has not visited Thorold since the 2005
Season. The Civic Holiday Monday Show in August the
last two seasons has switched its focus to the Advance
Auto Parts Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series.
After the non-point
swing last month to the Volusia Speedway in Florida –
the Big Block Series has its first point event tonight
at the Hagerstown Speedway. Race fans cans catch all
the action live on the internet by subscribing to
www.dirtvision.com. Check it out if you aren’t able to
take it in live at the Maryland track!
“Bringing the Series
back to Merrittville is a big boost for the local 358
racers,” said Cory Reed, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast
Director of Competition & Track Sanctioning, “kicking
it off on a Saturday Night … we’re excited about
returning to Niagara … our race teams and race fans
will want to take it in.”
Thirteen events make up the 2008 Edition and the
Southern Ontario/Western New York racing community can
look forward to the first two events as the next event
after the opener is the 68 lap Alex Friesen Summer
Nationals at the Ransomville Speedway – Friday August
1st.
Race fans have become
accustomed to the Super DIRTcar Series qualifying
format with Time Trial Sessions lining up heats. At
the Series Opener however, Drivers will draw for their
heat starting spots.
The 100 lap event
could see 32 cars start as in addition to the 2007 SDS
Top 12 in overall points, there will be provisionals
available for drivers that finished from 13th to 15th
in points. Merrittville Speedway’s 2007 Top 5 Drivers
are guaranteed as well.
For additional tour
information, race teams can contact 358-Modified
Series Director Gaston Salvas (450/655-5022 or
514/817-2270; e-mail gastonsalvas@hotmail.com) or
