Thorold, Ontario
(March 14) – As March Break winds down for another
year – kids of all ages will be lining up at movie
theatres across Southern Ontario and Western New York
for the Friday opening of Horton Hears a Who.
It won’t be long
either before Horton Hears a Race Car and race fans
are lining up at Merrittville Speedway in anticipation
of the Baron Roofing Spring Sizzler 100 – Saturday
April 26th – that signifies the start of the Thorold
track’s 57th Season.
“We all grew up with
our Dr. Seuss favorites,” reminisces (Merrittville
GM), “and many of us grew up at the race track as well
… and because of that … our 2008 Edition of the
Meridian Credit Union Kids Club will continue to
entertain our younger fans and develop in them the
same passion for the sport we enjoy as adults.”
Bicknell herself –
like so many fans and race team members is a second
generation devotee of the sport – is preparing for her
6th year at the controls of the show place owned by
partners Pete & Nancy Bicknell and Randy &Tracey
Williamson. The 57th consecutive season will begin in
just 43 days and in its storied history – there are
many other second generation stories to tell – even
some that reach a third or fourth generation racing
enthusiast!
Horton will soon see a
race car - 20 of them - as drivers representing all 5
Dirt Weekly Racing Series Divisions will invade the
Pen Centre from March 31st to April 6th.
“All week long …
informs Bicknell, “racers and crews like to be with
their cars … others not in the show come to check out
their competition and along with the fans … you get to
catch up with some you may not have seen since the
last race.”
Race fans of course
will be able to pick up their 2008 Schedule Cards in
addition to other information on special events.
Everything leads up to the 100 lap Konzelmann Estate
Winery Enduro that will close the season – Sunday
September 7th – and Rules Information for that series
that allows anyone to experience the thrills of dirt
track racing will be available.
While the final
details for the Meridian Credit Union Kids Club are
being finalized – it is expected that the 2008
Schedule will also be available when Members register
during the Pen Centre
Each week during the
season, Club Members will participate in games, do
crafts, and have special events such as the popular
poster contest, box car race, Enduro Car decorating
and another year of Bike Giveaways.
“Race fans are still
talking about what may be our best races each year …
the Bike Races,” adds Bicknell, “… Alan Johnson
against Mike Dooley … the one involving inaugural
Lucas Oil Shoot Out Champions Wayne Conn and Scott
Wood both two years ago … not to mention Big Block
Star Tim Fuller taking over the flagging duties and
Paul Klager’s wipeout in last year’s edition.”
