For Release - Thursday March 13, 2008 - From Jim
Irvine - Merrittville Speedway Public Relations - 905-685-7223 – Winter Office
Thorold, Ontario (March 13) – Merrittville
Speedway would like to wish Billy Crystal a Happy Birthday!
The actor and comedian turns 60 on Friday and
in celebration of the big day – will take to the field this afternoon as a
member of the New York Yankees when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in
Grapefruit League action in Tampa, Florida – not too far from where a number of
Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite Drivers started their 2008 Racing Seasons at the East
Bay Raceway Park last month.
Crystal – one the Yankee’s biggest fans – will
be living a dream when he dons his #60 Yankee uniform after signing a one day
MLB contract.
What does all this have to do with the fact
that Merrittville Speedway’s Baron Roofing Spring Sizzler 100 is now 44 days
away and counting?
If you are in the grandstands for the biggest
Season Opener in the Thorold track’s 57 year history – or any other event
throughout the season and get the racing itch yourself and are thinking that
you might like to give it a try – Merrittville has just the event for you – and
you don’t have to wait until you turn 60 to experience it!
Its the Konzelmann Estate Winery Enduro
Qualifying Series – 3 events throughout the summer leading up to the 100 lap
Finale that closes the season – Sunday September 7th.
“Our Enduros attract all kinds,” relates (GM)
Erica Bicknell, “ drivers with no experience … some that have run this type of
event before and even some of our regular Saturday Night competitors … but in
the end it’s more survival than experience that counts.”
Enduro Racing at Merrittville was quite
prevalent many years ago and made a return in 2004. While regular L. St. Amand
Enterprises 358 Modified competitor Dan Miller won that event the last three
have went to first timers Dave Walters and Dan McNeil and Dave Bogusat.
Enduro Rules for the qualifiers and the season
ending 100 lap Konzelmann Estate Winery event are available from the Speedway
Winter office during the weeks leading up to the season and then at the
Speedway in season or on line from www.merrittvillespeedway.com.
“It’s pretty basic,” adds Bicknell, “ it’s a
street car with safety modifications – everything else is stock as you found it
… an Enduro car is not a race car – it’s a car that races.”
Depending on what happens in any of the
qualifiers, a competitor could use the same car in more than one event.
On three occasions during the 2008 Season,
Merrittville Speedway will present 25 lap Enduro Qualifiers – Monday May 19th,
Saturday June 28th and Saturday August 9th.
In the 100 lap event Sunday September 7th, the
winner will receive $1,000.00 plus a Trophy in the final racing event of the
57th Season.
Each of the Qualifiers and the 100 lap event
itself are open to both Men and Women, however the Sunday Season Finale also
features a Queens event for Ladies only.
Once the pole sitter is determined from the
Financial Care Group Monday Night Madness Event May 19th, the 2nd place starter
will be the winner of the Saturday June 28th’s Piller’s Hot Dog Night
presented by Boltworks.
When the Fireworks have cleared from that
mid-season special, a third starter will be declared from the August 9th CMH
Leasing ‘Help a Child Smile’ Night.
