(November 12) – Two first time champions were among the many honorees as the
Merrittville Speedway Kart Club celebrated the 2007 Season November 11th at
rural Thorold’s Club Castropignano.
Jake Lutz had a story book kart season at
Merrittville as the Hamburg NY driver not only won the overall Season
Championship in the RCM Racing Equipment Cassell Manufacturing Original Pizza
Logs Junior 1 Division – he also won the division’s Spring and Summer Series
Titles among other awards. In doing so, Lutz won Kart Club high 11 features en
route to amassing 2,543 total points.
Another first time champion also was Ben
Werth who won his first Ed MacPherson Construction Original Pizza Logs Junior 2
Title as a rookie – a year after winning the Junior 1 Title. Werth – from
Gasport NY won 8 features throughout the season.
Cori Webber successfully defended her 2006
KC Auto Parts Superior PetroFuels Junior Restricted Heavy Championship in 2007
with the Ransomville NY driver winning 5 features.
Another Ransomville NY driver’s domination
continued as the Philbrick Farm & Garden Equipment Original Pizza Logs Senior
Division saw Ron Spatorico continue his stranglehold on the division in earning
his 9 th straight title.
Merrittville Speedway’s youngest group of
karters – the Drummond Home Hardware Garden City Auto Complex Novice Division
received Competition Awards, as they do not run for points.
Alex Riley, Bailey Klager, Brad Webber,
Bryon Ruston-Dykstra, Dylan Davidson, Gene Gregoric, Gregory Beckett, James
Price, John Riley, Jordan Cosco, Joshua Dmytrow, Mackenzie St. Jean, Maizee
Bodman, Owen May, Steven Beckett and Tristan Jeffrey – all Kart Club Members –
were all presented special awards.
Merrittville Speedway’s Kart Club Member
Drivers shared in the more than $10,000 in cash point fund and prize awards.
The afternoon affair celebrated the 14th season of Kart Racing.
During the proceedings, Race Director Dave
Sim announced that he was stepping down after serving in the role for much of
the club’s history.
“I was racing with my son Stephen,”
remembered Sim, “I was asked to help out with the developing club … it’s
success has come from the racers and their families, the track owners and staff
and from our many valued sponsors … together we grew the club to what it is
today.”
Former karter and now Saturday Night 2007
Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite Champion Paul Klager was introduced as the new Race
Director and for the Beamsville resident it will be a busy summer of 2008. In
addition to his own racing and his daughter Bailey’s second year of kart racing
– his wife Denise is expecting their third child.
“I’d like to maintain the level that Dave
has achieved,” revealed Klager, “ I’ll strive to keep everything on an equal
playing field … there’s some new ideas and foremost – Tuesday Nights will
continue to be fun for racers and their families alike.”
Kart Body Kits donated to the Club by
Original Pizza Logs were won via draws by Tristan Jeffrey (Novice), Jake Lutz,
(Junior 1), Jesse Johnston (Junior 2), Cori Webber, (Junior Restricted Heavy)
and Aaron Barker (Senior Medium).
A number of Specialty Awards were handed
out and the winners are listed as follows.

Construction Original Pizza Logs Junior 2 Championship as a rookie.
Former Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite Driver
and long-time Kart Club supporter Tim Tallman was presented the Race Director’s
Award. Tallman is a member of the Kart Tech Team and is involved in presenting
the annual pre-season Kart School while guiding the kart racing career of his
youngest son – Mitchell Tallman
A Special
Recognition Award was presented to Starter Stephen Sim.
Kart Banquet Notes – Philbrick Farm &
Garden Equipment Original Pizza Logs Senior Medium veteran driver Bret Robbins
announced that he would be a rookie Hoosier Stock Driver in 2008 – joining the
impressive list of Kart graduates wo have gone on to successful Stock Car
Careers. Robbins and his family recently purchased the M1 Hoosier Stock that
Rob Murray earned his first Championship with this past season. The car struck
gold a second time as former Junior Restricted Heavy Kart Champion Brad Sheehan
also drove the car to the Brian’s Tire Repair Street Stock Title at the
Humberstone Speedway.
